Savings & Checking
• Share (Savings) Account
A minimum balance of $50 is required to open a share account and must be maintained. Deposits will earn interest daily, with dividends to be paid and compounded quarterly.
• Christmas Club Share Account
Are you tired of having to use your credit cards for Christmas purchases or never having enough money during the holidays? The State Highway District #5 Credit Union can help by offering you a Christmas Club Account. When you deposit into your Christmas Club Account throughout the year, not only will you have saved enough money for the holidays, you will receive extra cash with the interest you earn on this account. There is no minimum balance required on your club account, however, you must have a minimum balance of $50 to begin earning interest. Special arrangements must be made for early withdrawal; otherwise a check for the balance will be issued on the first business day of November and mailed to the address shown on the account.
• Certificates of Deposit
The interest on our certificates of deposit is earned daily, paid and compounded monthly. The Credit Union offers six month, one year, and an eighteen month certificate of deposit.
All certificates of deposit will automatically rollover at maturity at whatever the current rate is at maturity. There will be a ten-day grace period during which you may surrender the certificate without penalty. You will receive notice prior to maturity.
• Individual Retirement Accounts
The State Highway District #5 Credit Union offers Traditional, Roth and Coverdell Educational Savings Accounts. Interest on our IRA accounts is earned daily, compounded and paid quarterly.
IRA accounts are insured separately from other accounts that you maintain with the Credit Union. The National Credit Union Association adds the Traditional IRA and Roth IRA together and is insured in the aggregate to the maximum amount of $100,000. The Coverdell Education Savings Accounts are insured as irrevocable trust accounts and will be added to other irrevocable trust accounts and insured up to $100,000.
Traditional IRA
A Traditional IRA brings you significant up-front tax advantages, and with less money taken out for taxes, the power of compound earnings is strengthened. With a Traditional IRA:
- Earnings accumulate tax-deferred until withdrawn
- Contributions are tax-deductible if you qualify
- The amount you can contribute is increasing
Roth IRA
Roth IRAs offer unique and exciting savings opportunities, and they’ve gotten better over the years. Roth IRAs give many members an easy and safe way to plan for the future. With a Roth IRA:
- Contributions are allowed at any age
- Qualified distributions are tax-free
- Flexible withdrawal options are available
Unlike traditional IRAs, your contributions to a Roth IRA are never tax-deductible. However, the money in your Roth IRA, including earnings, can be withdrawn tax-free. Of course, you must conform to the plan provisions to get this tax-free advantage.
Effective 2005, total combined contributions to Roth and Traditional IRA's are up to $4,000 per year or 100% of compensation, whichever is less. Anyone under age 70 who has income from compensation (or who is filing jointly with a spouse who earns compensation) can contribute. For a married couple, each spouse can contribute up to $4,000 for a total contribution of $8,000. Contributions may be tax-deductible based on your income level. See over age 50 "Catch-up" information below.
"Catch Up" Contribution for People 50 and Older
To make up for lost time, workers 50 and older before the end of the taxable year can make additional contributions above the new maximum limits as follows:
- $500 per year 2005
- $1,000 per year (year 2006 & thereafter)
• Coverdell Educational Savings Account
The sole purpose for this account is to help pay for a child’s education expenses, such as tuition, fees, books, supplies, equipment, and, in some cases, room and board and computers. The account is opened in the child’s name. Maximum contribution is $2,000 per student per year and is not tax deductible. Contributions are not allowed once the child reaches 18, or any year that a contribution is made to a state tuition program. Withdrawals are allowed tax free if used for qualified higher education expenses.

Fraud Protection
The State Highway District #5 Credit Union and VISA® are using a variety of fraud prevention methods to ensure that your Visa® card is protected. The primary method used is Falcon, a neural network, which monitors your account 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for unusual activity. This method is considered the most effective way to spot fraudulent card use. It learns the way you normally use your card. When your card is used in a way that does not match your typical spending habits, our fraud notification system lets us know that a high-risk authorization has occurred. When we receive such notification, we will contact you immediately to verify the transaction. If your account was used fraudulently at that time, we can take important steps to block your account from further unauthorized use. It is important that we are able to reach you in a timely manner. Please keep us updated if your telephone number or address changes.
Your Visa® card is protected by Verified by Visa® - it password protects your card for free when you shop online. The next time you shop at participating online stores, you’ll see some new screens. Enter the information requested to activate your card in order to complete your transaction. It only takes a moment, and then your card will have password protection whenever you shop online. • Carol Sines Scholarship
The Carol Sines Memorial Scholarship was established in 1991 as a tribute to Carol Sines for his service. "To promote thrift among its members and to create a source of credit for them at legitimate rates of interest for provident, productive and educational purposes" complements the goals of the Credit Union and is a method to give back to the members.
Carol was the Treasurer for the Credit Union when it existed in a "briefcase" in his bottom desk drawer and was only operated on a part time basis for a short time each day. After he retired from the WSDOT, he became the full time President and a 14' x 70' mobile home was purchased and located on the back lot of the WSDOT property in Union Gap. He served in this capacity from 1971 to 1983. After his retirement from the Credit Union, he also served as a volunteer on the Supervisory Committee. Carol was an example of the volunteer spirit and character that established and maintains the Credit Union movement and he could always be counted on to serve on any committee or undertake any project.
If you are a member of the Credit Union or a dependent of a member and enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited college, University or Trade School for the year of application, you may apply for the Carol Sines memorial Scholarship. The application may be downloaded and printed. Mail the completed application to the State Highway District #5 Credit Union, PO Box 10304, Yakima, WA 98909 no later than May 15th of the application year.
